What you need to know:

  • The increment is attributed to the decision to amend Local Government Finance Act, Cap 290 during 2016/17 fiscal year and give the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) the mandate to collect property tax in all districts instead of district authorities.

Dodoma. Property tax collection has increased from Sh28.28 billion in 2015/16 to Sh34.09 billion in 2016/17 fiscal years, Tanzanian government reported in Parliament on Wednesday.

The increment is attributed to the decision to amend Local Government Finance Act, Cap 290 during 2016/17 fiscal year and give the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) the mandate to collect property tax in all districts instead of district authorities.

This was revealed by deputy minister for Finance and Planning Ashatu Kijaji.

She said the increase is by 20.6 per cent compared to the amount that was collected by district councils.

Dr Kijaji was responding to a question by Ms Cecilia Paresso (Special Seats-Chadema), who sought to know to what extent TRA had succeeded in collecting property tax.

The deputy minister, however, assured the public that the government has formulated a good budgetary policy to ensure district and municipal councils received funds to implement development projects.
