Tata new models impress buyers

Dar es Salaam. Global truck and bus manufacturer Tata Motors is seeing a brighter future of its commercial vehicles after introducing a new model that the company says was positively received in the market.

Tata Ultra was launched yesterday in Tanzania and already the company has received 75 bookings since it made trials and the orders are expected to double soon, according to Tata auto business head Prashant Shukla.

“We understand the customer needs and this is going to make our transformation journey fantastic,” he said.

Tata controls 33 per cent of the commercial vehicle market share and this will accelerate the sales, he added.

The Tata Ultra trucks cater to payloads ranging 4 to 11 tonnes with engine capacities from 125 HP to 180 HP. The Tata Ultra buses are available in 42 seats AC and 44 seats Non AC configurations.

The firm said it was not planning to set an assembling plant in the country but was ready to do so if the market conditions allow.

“We are evaluating the possibilities but there has to be very strong reasons to do that,” said the head of commercial vehicles international business at Tata Motors Mr Rudrarup Maitra.

“As a major player, we are committed to shaping the industry here with the latest global technologies, giving the Tanzanian customer competitive business advantages with the trusted credentials of the Tata Motors brand,” he added.

Tata is said to have sold about 6,000 units of vehicles during the last 10 years.

Tata Motors Limited is India’s largest automobile company with consolidated revenues of $41.6 billion in 2015/16. Through subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in 46 countries.
