Cargo clearance likely to take longer as new scanner is installed at Dar port, says TICTS

  • Fears arise over possible delays in cargo clearance at the Dar es Salaam port following the installation of a new scanner

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Container Terminal Services (TICTS) is worried that the installation of a new scanner by the government at berth No.11 will lengthen the process of cargo clearance at the Dar es Salaam port.

According to TICTs statement issued on Friday October 25, 2018, while it is important to abide by procedures of cargo discharge, clearance and security regulations at the port, the company will seek relevant channels of communications to ensure that the new scanner does not affect the TICTS work.

According to TICTS, the channels of communications sought are with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and Tanzania Habours Authority (THA).

“TICTS would like to announce that the TRA will be scanning all containers upon discharges from the vessels prior to starting with the goal of enhancing cargo clearance procedures for customs officials as well as national security," reads part of TICTS statement.

According to TICTS, the TRA mandate to scan the discharged cargo at the port follows the government installation of the new scanner.

"TICTS will continue to work closely with TRA at THA to ensure that any operational impacts on efficiency are kept at minimum level," the statement further reads.

Tanzania Transporters Association vice president Omari Kizango told The Citizen yesterday said that they were working to find ways of averting possible delays in cargo movement at the port.
