Demolition of Buguruni houses illegal, rights commission says

Dar es Salaam. The Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG) has ruled that the demolition of houses in Buguruni Kwa Mnyamani was illegal.
The commission has also given the Reli Asset Holding Company (Rahco) 90 days to compensate residents, who were affected by the demolition. Besides that, the CHRGG warned the police not to be involved in activities, which violated the country’s laws.
The ruling was delivered by CHRGG chairman Bahame Nyanduga on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
Some Buguruni Kwa Mnyamani residents, who include Mr Saidi Bindo and 72 others, filed a case at the CHRGG after their houses were demolished in March, this year.
Mr Nyanduga said according to the laws a railway reserve was 15 and not 30 metres.
“The demolition was carried out contrary to the country’s laws because the Railways Act indicates that a railway reserve is 15 and not 30 metres,” said Mr Nyanduga as he was delivering the ruling.
