Kabwe calls for amendment of National Statistics Act

Dar es Salaam. The Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT) national leader, Mr Zitto Kabwe has called for amendment of some sections of the National Statistics Act 2015.

Mr Zitto, the Kigoma Urban legislator, made the remark when speaking with reporters at the Financial Crime Unit (FCU) offices.

Mr Zitto, who has been more vocal against the government lately, said the current National Statistics Act denies stakeholders' freedom to question the country’s economy statistics from the National Bureau of statistics (NBC).

"There are some sections in the National Statistics Act that need to be revised in order to give people an opportunity to criticise the government whenever wrong statistics are released," he said.

The firebrand lawmaker disclosed that ACT-Wazalendo is already considering legal measures against the statistics law.

He was speaking shortly after appearing before the FCU where the entire ACT-Wazalendo Central committee members were in attendance.

Earlier, Mr Kabwe reported at the Chang'ombe Police Station for interrogation in adherence to an order issued last week.

The outspoken MP was last week arrested and interrogated by the police for allegedly uttering seditious statements against the government, which also contravened the cybercrime and statistics acts.

Nonetheless, he was released on bail and ordered to report back today.
