Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) plans to launch another phase of the Kinyerezi II project in September this year.

That was said by Tanesco board chair Alexander Kyaruzi during the 42nd Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair.

According to him, the Kinyerezi II generates 160MW and the remaining 80MW will be produced during the next phase of the project   to be launched in September.

The power will be pumped into the national grid.

The current national power demand stands at 1,050MW but the company produces more than 1,400MW.

Tanesco has been implementing a number of mega projects including that at the Stigler’s Gorge to generate 2,100MW.

Also, it has gas-powered electricity plants.

He stressed that the country's power generation had surpassed the demand and there was the need to connect more homes and businesses to electricity.

"We encourage people to set up industries, and we plan to produce more power,” he said.
