Mtwara. The legislator for Mtwara Urban Constituency, Mr Maftaha Nachuma (CUF), has dismissed reports circulating on social media that he was planning to ditch the Civic United Front (CUF) and join the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Speaking to The Citizen on Wednesday, December 6, Mr Nachuma refuted the reports, noting that there were people who intended to tarnish his image for their personal interests.

He urged citizens to ignore the reports, noting that he was still working hand to hand with residents of his constituency in bringing about development.

“Historically, CUF leaders, members and supporters are not people with defection history. The recently defection witnessed was prompted by the MPs personal reasons to fill his empty stomach, but I will be the last member to ditch CUF,” said Mr Nachuma.

He linked the ongoing wave of defections to hunger among Members of Parliament who prioritized personal interests instead of advocating and bringing development to their people.

“Most of them thought they will individually benefit after becoming legislators, but on the contrary, they find that things are not the way they had perceived the before,” he said.

Many MPs including, Mr Nachuma, have been recently linked with defection rumours to CCM.

That was merely few days after the Kinondoni Constituency MP, Mr Maulid Mtulia, announced his decision to quit CUF and join CCM, being part of his support to President John Magufuli’s leadership.
