Kibaha. Disabled people in Kibahal, Coast Region, have promised to stop begging if they will be empowered to create jobs.

They said they were not happy with begging, but were only conditioned by circumstances to do so. They said they would appreciate if they were supported so that they could engage in various development projects.

Speaking during the reception of four sewing machines donated by Kibaha Urban MP Silvestry Koka (CCM), Tanzania Federation of Disabled People’s Organisation (Shivyawata) secretary Happiness Matasi thanked the legislator for the donation and said they were now sure of meeting together at their centre and engage in projects like tailoring.

Earlier, while handing over the sewing machines, worth Sh4 million, the MP’s secretary Method Mselewa urged the disabled people to utilise the centre and implement projects that would attract other benefactors to support them.

He said the MP was struck by their group after learning that they were interested in various activities, but only lacked tools for production, so supporting them would make a difference in their lives.

“MP Koka has sent me to hand over to you these four sewing machines that you had asked for and he is pleased to see how you are involved in sewing, batik making and growing vegetables. He has promised to support you and I ask other stakeholders to do the same,” he said.

For her part, CCM Youth Wing chairperson Azilongwa Bohari urged them not to give up, but accept their conditions.

The Kibaha Town Council has 680 disabled people, including people with albinism and most of them are engaged in entrepreneurial activities, gardening and tailoring.
