The Minister of Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa, has directed the National Construction Council (NCC) to set indicative prices for the construction of buildings as other countries have.

Speaking at a construction stakeholders’ meeting to discuss NCC efficiency, he said in other countries the prices for construction were clear and transparent.

In Tanzania, when a person wants to build a house, he can’t know the price as the council has not yet done its homework.

“In developed countries, when you want to construct a house or any other structure there are standards and the price indicated per every square metre,” he noted.

Prof Mbarawa asked stakeholders to give their views on how to improve the construction sector, which was growing faster.

However, he said in 2016 the construction sector contributed 14 per cent to the national income and the government was ready to receive recommendations that would help improve the law, which established the NCC.

He directed the NCC to supervise the quality of construction materials and educate the public on that.

For his part, NCC Board Chairman, Prof Mayunga Nkunya, said the council planned to improve its work, as collapsing of building was one of the challenges caused by substandard construction materials.

He said stakeholders would discuss and recommend to the government how to improve NCC efficiency.
