The three-day event also seeks to connect and train students from various technological backgrounds on how they can come up with ideas that will transform cities and modernise data collection.

Bits and Bytes has organised the event, which is sponsorship by the Finnish Embassy, Twaweza and the Aga Khan University.

Bits and Bytes co-founder and managing director Lilian Madeje told reporters yesterday that 70 students from different universities and colleges would present their ideas aimed at solving challenges in Tanzanian cities.

“Forty students have innovative ideas of transforming Dar City while 30 others want to come up with modern ways of collecting and storing data.”

According to her, the ideas are in the fields of finance, agriculture, education, health, transport, and housing.

The East African Institute director at the Aga Khan University, Dr Alex Awiti, said it was important for locals to provide solutions to their challenges.

He believes through a programme aimed at connecting East African students with various technological careers, innovative ideas will be brought to turn the cities’ challenges into business and employment opportunities.

“We plan to us students to bring solutions for challenges facing East African cities. Dar es Salaam City is our pilot study of the programme,” he said.
