Dar es Salaam. Golfers will converge at the Moshi Gymkhana Club (MGC) course on March 11 for the Tanzania Stroke play Championship, it has been disclosed.

The two-day tournament organised in collaboration with the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU), will cover 36 holes.

Chris Martin, the host club’s captain, told The Citizen yesterday that preparations for the prestigious event were on track.

“We have just over two weeks before the tournament takes place, but preparations for the event are on the right track. It’s our belief that things will go as planned,” said Martin,

“Golfers here have also intensified practice with a view to performing well at the tournament, which will pull together competitors from six clubs.”

The skipper said the competition will be open for both men and women.

“This event is open for men and women, so we hope that the golfers intending to participate have shifted a gear in training. I have good feeling that this year’s edition will be more competitive,” he said.

The MGC captain said Kilimanjaro-based Kibo Place Hotel will be the main sponsor of the tournament and thanked them for their timely support.

Martin called on other companies to offer their support as co-sponsors.

“We are grateful for what the Kibo Place Hotel management has been doing in supporting golf development in the country,” he said. He added that the MGC has already sent invitations to five TGU-recognised clubs, namely Lugalo, Dar Gymkhana, Morogoro Gymkhana, TPC and Kagera’s Misenyi.

Martin said fabulous prizes will be up for grabs in all competitive events, including gross winner, Division A, Division B, Division C, Ladies, senior and juniors’ nett winners.

Some of the golfers expected to slug it out at the tournament are Temba Herman, Adam Abas, Sadick Mohamed, Habib Mohamed, Kanji Shafiq and Shayo Jonathan. Others are Mushi Albert, Urasa Godfrey, Richard Gomes and Said Nkya, Masumbuko Patrick, Said Adam and Isaack Wanyeche.
