Mkapa names new Udom vice chancellor, two deputies

Dar es Salaam. The University of Dodoma (Udom) chancellor and former president Benjamin Mkapa has appointed Prof Faustine Karrani Bee the varsity’s new vice chancellor.

The appointment letter dated March 15, 2019, which was signed by Mr Mkapa’s personal assistant Malago Malashimba, says currently Mr Bee serves as the vice chancellor of Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU).

“Prof Alexander Boniface Makulilo has been appointed deputy Udom vice chancellor responsible for Academics, Research and Nutrition. Prof Makulilo is currently serving as the head of Social Sciences at the University of Dar es Salaam,” reads part of the letter.

In another appointment, Mr Mkapa has picked Prof Donald Gregory Mpanduji, the new Udom vice chancellor responsible for Planning, Finance and Administration.

According to the statement, Prof Mpanduji is currently the head of college of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).

Prof Bee is filling the vacant position left by Prof Egid Mubofu who died in December, last year, in South Africa where he had been receiving treatment.

Prof Mubofu who had a vision to strengthen research at the university served the university in his capacity for nine months since his appointment.

He replaced Prof Idris Kikula whose term in office ended on March 17, 2018, after holding the position for 11 years.

Udom is the country’s largest university, admitting over 10,000 students, with expectations to enroll over 50,000 students, triple the size of the University of Dar es Salaam (Udsm), when it becomes fully operational.

It has seven colleges including the College of Earth Sciences, the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences and the College of Informatics and Virtue Education.

Others are the College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Health and Applied Sciences and College of Business Studies and Law.

Udom is the country’s largest university admitting over 10,000 students, with expectations to enroll over 50,000 students which is triple the size of the University of Dar es Salaam (Udsm) when it becomes fully operational.
