Two UDSM students, driver die in an ambulance crash

Dar es Salaam. Two University of Dar es Salaam (USDM) students and a driver have died following an accident involving an ambulance and a truck on Monday night.

The accident occurred at Ubungo River Side area, leaving another student in serious injuries. The student has been admitted at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).

A statement released by the Dar es Salaam University Students Organization (Daruso) confirmed by the Deputy Minister for Health and Cafeteria, Mr Enock Charles names the two deceased students as Ms Maria Godian and Mr Steven E Sango.

The statement says the UDSM ambulance driver was identified by a single name, James. The casualty was named as Abishai Nkiko.

According to the statement, Ms Godian was a first year student at the social science department, Mr Sango was a second year student at the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET) pursuing Chemical and Petroleum Engineering (CPE) while Mr Nkiko is a third year student at the CoET taking a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering.

Speaking to The Citizen on Tuesday, Mr Charles said the accident occurred at around 9pm when the three patient students were being taken to the UDSM main campus hospital from Mabibo Hostel.

“Reports from the scene says the ambulance driver was driving at a high speed and was at the opposite lane,” said Mr Charles during a telephone interview.

According to him Daruso leadership have this morning gathered at the office of the Dean of Students to establish the way forward.
