Emotions run high as MCL journos get top Ejat awards

Dar es Salaam. It was an emotional moment for Ms Florence Majani, Assistant News Editor for Mwananchi newspaper as she was announced the overall winner in the 2016 Excellence in Journalism Award Tanzania (Ejat) competition, which is organised by the Media Council of Tanzania.
Speaking at the award ceremony on Saturday night, with tears in her eyes, Ms Majani said it was dedication and hard work that paid off. This is the first time for a female journalist to clinch the overall position since the establishment of Ejat in 2008.
She encouraged other journalists, especially women, to continue working hard. Apart from being named the overall winner, Ms Majani received two prizes in the Culture as well as and Human Rights and Good Governance categories.
Besides Ms Majani, five other journalists from MCL won a total of eight awards. A total of 37 awards were up for grabs.
Speaking during the ceremony, veteran journalist Jenerali Ulimwengu urged government officials to share public information with journalists on time to bring awareness among citizens on the issues they do and decide. He said corruption is rife in government because the public is not aware on what is going on.
He also warned the state media against being used by government officials to cleanse themselves when they find themselves guilty.
The veteran journalist who also chairs the Raia Mwema Board paid tribute to all winners of 2016 Ejat competition, noting that they made it against numerous obstacles to come up with stories that have impact to the societies and the nation as a whole.
