Fined drivers owe police Sh15 billlion

Dar es Salaam. Fined drivers owe the police force a total of Sh15 billion for offenses committed in a period ranging from January to October 2018.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the new police force spokesperson Ahmed Msangi said the debt from fines charged against drivers—exceeding seven days—are now overdue.

However, during the same period, roads accidents have declined by 33 per cent compared to the previous year.

In a period from January to October, road accidents have gone down from 1887 to in the same period as 2017 to 1264. Deaths on the road have also declined by 26 per cent from 2250 in 2017 to 1661.

Mr Msangi reminded owners of motor vehicles to always inspect them and ensure they pay fines on time.

“This will save them from the embarrassment of having to be pulled over during vehicle inspection,” explained Msangi.

Car theft has also declined by 19.2 per cent from 240 cases to 194. Cases of armed robbery have also decreased by 23.2 per cent to 378 from 492.

According to Msangi the decline in accidents and crimes shows that the police force in cooperation with various stakeholders are working together in fighting crimes in the country and ensuring peace.

Further, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Sirro has made minor changes in the police force by appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ahmed Msangi as the police force spokesperson.

Msangi who was the Head of Human Crimes at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is replacing Mr Barnabas Mwakalukwa who has been assigned as the Staff Officer for Coast region.

Mwakalukwa will now replace coastal region staff officer Elias Chatanda who becomes the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Mtwara.

Mtwara RPC Luca Mkondia has been assigned to the post of police force headquarters in Dar es Salaam as the Commissioner for human crimes at the Criminal Investigation Department.
