Nec reinstates CUF councillorship candidate

What you need to know:

  • Tanzania’s electoral body has reinstated the CUF councillorship candidate for Kibutuka Ward, Mr Mdohoma Ismail, who was falsely barred from vying for the position.
  • According to NEC officials filling nomination forms starting with last name was permitted by election laws and regulations.

Dar es Salaam. The National Electoral Commission (Nec) reinstated Kibutuka councillorship candidate on the CUF ticket, Mr Mdohoma Ismail, on Sunday, September 30.

Mr Ismail, who hails from the ward located in Liwale District, Lindi Region, was dropped by the election supervisor because his names allegedly differed in the nomination forms.

The NEC statement released by the acting director of elections, Mr Hamis Mkunga, added that the election supervisor in the district council has also been axed.

“NEC in its September 30 meeting has accepted Mr Ismail’s petition after being satisfied that by filling nomination forms number 8C beginning with last name followed by others wasn’t a problem,” he said.

“Section 2 of the law allows candidates to fill nomination forms starting with any name he/she want to appear in block letters in the ballot paper, therefore the candidate has been reinstated.”

According to him, the decisions were made after the electoral body received Mr Ismail’s petition according to Section 44 (5) of Local Government elections when read together with regulation 28 (1) of the Councillors Elections of 2015.

NEC has reminded all political parties taking part in the October 13 by-elections to abide by the electoral laws and regulations.
