Six contest Tanganyika Law Society presidency

Dar es Salaam. Six lawyers have been endorsed to stand for the forthcoming Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) presidency election set for April this year.

Reports confirmed by TLS chief executive officer Kaleb Gamaya named them as its former president John Seka, Lawyers Environmental Action Team director Rugemeleza Nshala, Godfrey Wasonga, Gaspar Mwanalyeka, Godwin Ngwilimi and Charles Tumaini.

Earlier, the outgoing president Fatma Karume showed interest to seek re-election, but later changed her mind.

The society’s elections have been attracting public interest since 2017 when Singida East MP Tundu Lissu vied for the position and won.

However, Ms Lissu served the position for only six months before surviving an assassination attempt in Dodoma on September 7, 2017.

He was flown to Nairobi before being sent to Brussels where he is still receiving treatment.

Recently, Ms Karume complained about being excluded from a list of leaders who were to address Law Day 2019 in Dar es Salaam on February 6.

According to reports, Mpale Mpoki and Neema Massame will contest the post of the vice president while Hussein Mtembwa and Aziza Msangi want the position of the treasurer.

Those endorsed to vie for the TLS Governing Council membership are Harold Sungusia, Jebra Kambole, Paul Kaunda, Tike Mwambipile, Maria Pengo, Matojo Cosatta, Anjelista Nashon, Edwin Alon, Atranus Method, Mussa Kassim, Stephen Mwakibolwa, Jacob Mugendi, Nmbute Akaro, Elias Machibya, Deus Nyabiri, Constantine Mutalemwa, Baraka Mbwilo, Edmund Ngemela, Magdalena Sylister, Leocard Kipengele and Armando Swenya.

Furthermore, report say Mr Thomas Msasa will vie for leadership of Tabora Province, with Ms Teresia Fabian as the assistant and Kanani Chombala and Dotto Banga as  treasurer.

While Tumaini Burhani vies for Tanga Province leadership while Mr Eric Akaro seeks to be the assistant, with Neema Burhani being treasurer.

In Mtwara Province, Reinery Songea seeks to be elected leader who would be assisted by Issa Chiputula and Alex Msalenge as treasurer.

For Kagera, Mr Aaron Kabunga seeks to become the leader who will be assisted by Peter Kipfumu, Abeil Rugambwa or Zainab Ally and that Ms Thereza Bujiku vies for the treasury position.

Other provinces include Shinyanga, Mwanza, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Morogoro, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Ruvuma Mbeya and Iringa.
