Suspected robber killed in shootout

The Police Force in Tanga region have launched an intensive manhunt for three suspected armed robbers who escaped after a shootout with the police that killed one armed robber at Songa Village, in Muheza District, last week.

The Tanga Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP), Edward Bukombe said in Tanga that the suspected armed robber died here as he was being rushed to the hospital after being seriously injured in the exchange of fire with the police who were foiling an armed robbery at Songa Village in Muheza District.

Tanga. Police in Tanga Region have launched an intensive manhunt for three suspected armed robbers who escaped after a shootout with law enforcers that claimed the life of one of them at Songa Village, in Muheza District, last week.

Tanga regional police commander, senior assistant commissioner of police (SACP) Edward Bukombe, said the suspected armed robber died as he was being rushed to hospital after being seriously wounded in the exchange of fire. The police were foiling an armed robbery at Songa Village in Muheza District.

He said that the dead suspected bandit was identified as Mwinyiheri Nuru, 24, a resident of Mvuleni in Dar es Salaam City.

SACP Bukombe recounted that on March 14, at 9pm, Mwinyiheri with three other suspected bandits invaded a shop belonging to a businessman identified as Ally Nassor (Mwarabu) at Songo village and robbed him of Sh1 million after threatening him using arms.

He explained that Patrol Police were able to reach the area in time and the suspected bandits began firing towards the police who returned fire, wounding Mwinyiheri. Three other bandits vanished into the night, but Police managed to apprehend the seriously wounded Mwinyiheri. “Mwinyiheri died on the way to hospital,” SACP Bukombe said.

Police also seize one shotgun, a locally made gun (Gobore), two shotgun bullets, a Tecno mobile phone, a sim card, a voter card and a map used by the suspected bandits to reach the robbery victim’s house.

Other items seized by the police are one mobile phone battery and two machetes.
