Dar es Salaam. TPC Golf Club’s Adam Abbas grabbed an early lead at the 2018 Moshi Open at the Moshi Gymkhana Club course over the weekend.

Abbas shot six under par 65, thanks to two fine eagles at the fourth and 10th holes, and three birdies over the first, third and fifth holes.

The Moshi golfer beat a healthy field of more than 20 golfers to take the lead on Saturday, shrugging off a challenge from the country’s golf sensation Victor Joseph.

For two-time winner Joseph, one of the pre-tournament favourites, was expected to give Abbas a real run of his money in the final day (yesterday).

The other golfers who played impressively on Day One include Moshi Gymkhana Club’s Adam Said, who finished third.

The championship has drawn top golfers from various clubs around the country, including Joyce Warega of Lugalo Club in Dar es Salaam.

Other elite female players in the event are Madina Idd of the Arusha Gymkhana Club, Hawa Wanyeche of Lugalo Club and Amanda Malula.

“It’s really great to be leading. I don’t think the first day could have got any better,” said Abbas.

The two-day event, which was expected to come to a close yesterday evening, has been sanctioned by Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and sponsored by Kibo Palace Hotel and Kibo group of companies.

The sponsors have set aside various awards for winners, including trophies and certificates of appreciation.

It is one of the major golf competitions in the country.
