Tanzania: Legislator irked by govt response over abductions

Dodoma. Wingwi Member of Parliament (CUF) Juma Kombo Hamadi has said he is disappointed that the lack of progress of nabbing perpetrators of abductions.

Mr Hamadi said in Parliament on April 25, 2019 that there were too many such incidents, but he wondered why only one person was so far being held.

"There are many incidents including attempted assassination of Tundu Lisu, abduction of Mohammed Dewji, the incident of Mtambwe Street where seven youth were kidnapped. So, how is it possible that only one person is being held," queried Mr Hamad who had wanted to know the government’s strategy of curbing the growing tide of such incidents and the number of people, who have so far been arrested.

Home Affairs deputy minister Hamad Masauni who responded to the question said the fundamental obligation of the government was to ensure its citizens were safe all the time.

He said the government would continue to take action to deal with abductions, torture and killings.

The deputy minister told the Parliament intelligence reports has enabled the government to arrest one person for allegedly being involved in abductions.
