Dar es Salaam. An organisation commended President John Magufuli yesterday over his call to turn Independence Day into a day for cleaning the environment.
Late last month, President Magufuli cancelled Independence Day celebrations, and ordered a clean-up campaign, instead.
He said it would be “shameful” to spend huge sums of money on the celebrations when Tanzanians are dying of cholera.
And, NipeFagio (Kiswahili for Give me the Broom), which advocates a cleaner, safer and healthier city, termed the President’s announcement as “bold and empowering.”
“It is a bold and empowering move….Whilst our waste problem should not be underestimated, it is important for individuals to know that change is a personal responsibility… you can make a difference by making conscious decisions such as refusing plastic bags, not littering, disposing off your rubbish responsibly and supporting or initiating community clean-up initiatives,” the organisation’s director, Tania Hamilton said in a statement yesterday.
NipeFagio has joined the President’s call to action through its ‘HapaUsafiTu’ campaign on social media. “We are appealing to families, friends and neighbours to take out their brooms and to join in clean-up activities in and around their communities…The President has given us a perfect platform to show our respect for each other, our environment and our nation…let us seize the chance,” she said.
Supervised clean-ups will be held tomorrow at Msasani Beach from 8:30am - 11 am and at Coco Beach where the exercise will be undertaken for the whole day.
