Uranium firm, TZ in Sh1.3bn deal

The signing ceremony was held on the sidelines of a two days’ Wildlife Summit held in Dar es Salaam at the weekend.

Dar es Salaam. Mantra Tanzania Limited and the Wildlife Division of the Ministry of National Resources and Tourism signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which calls for both sides to closely coordinate and cooperate to combat elephant poaching in the southern Selous Game Reserve.

Under the agreement, uranium mining firm will inject some $800,000 (about Sh1.28 billion) in 2014 into anti-poaching activities.

Natural Resources and Tourism minister Lazaro Nyalandu signed the MoU on behalf of the government while the chief executive officer for Uranium One Inc. Chris Sattler signed on behalf of Mantra Tanzania.

The mining firm is currently developing the Mkuju River Project.

According to Mr Sattler, the MoU allows the firm, together with the Wildlife Division, to fully develop and implement an advanced, innovative programmeto curb poaching.
