Tanga. The Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) has announced progress towards the construction of the176km Tanga-Pangani-Saadani-Bagamoyo road.
There have been pledges to build the road since 2005.
Tanroads Tanga Regional Manager Alfred Ndumbaro, said bidding documents for the project had been prepared.
According to him, tenders will be invited to get contractors for the road construction.
Mr Ndumbaro was presenting a report at the just-ended Tanga Regional Roads Board meeting.
He informed participants in the meeting that the African Development Bank had shown interest in funding sections of the road which is an international project being implemented under the East African Community.
The project involves constructing a road linking Malindi-Mombasa- Lungalunga/Horohoro on the Kenyan side and connecting Tanga-Pangani-Saadani up to Bagamoyo.
“The construction of the road would also include a bypass from Utofu Bridge in Tanga City through Majani Mapana to Duga Mwembeni to link with the Tanga-Pangani road and another bypass in Pangani Town,” said Mr Ndumbaro.
He further explained that the work would also involve constructing roads to tourist destinations and hotels.
He mentioned the roads as Mwarongo, Ushingio and Kipumbwi.
The road construction has also taken into consideration possible environmental damages of the Saadani National Park and would pass through Mkwaja-Mkalamo-Kwamsisi-Makange-Matipwili and Gama to connect with Makurenge at Msata in Bagamoyo.
