7 vital questions to unlock business compatibility

Have you engaged in discussions about the future trajectory of the partnership? PHOTOI FILE

What you need to know:

  • Before you propose a partnership or accept one, take a moment to reflect.

"When you know, you know." I often hear this enigmatic certainty when I ask my married friends about how they knew their partners were “the ones," but how about in the realm of business?

How do you know if your business partnerships will be a success? How does one go about selecting the right business partner? Does this same intuition apply to guiding us with entrepreneurial visions?

I conducted an informal survey via various contacts that have fostered successful business partnerships, and what I learnt was that there isn't a one-size-fits-all formula, but there are various factors to evaluate.

I have compiled them as a list of questions to consider before you say “I do” to partnering up in business.

7 questions to determine your business partnership compatibility:

  1. Do you and your partner share a crystal-clear understanding of the business's overarching vision and long-term goals?
  2. Have you diligently evaluated whether the distinctive skills, expertise, and strengths each partner possesses align synergistically, thereby enhancing the collective capabilities of the partnership to achieve greater heights?
  3. Is each partner committed to the success of the business? Is there a sense of passion and dedication from all parties involved for sustained growth and accomplishment?
  4. To what extent is each partner willing to invest? (financially and time-wise)
  5. Is there a clearly defined structure for handling disputes to proactively prevent conflicts from impeding collaborative efforts?
  6. Have you engaged in discussions about the future trajectory of the partnership, exploring potential exit strategies, and ensuring that all partners are aligned on the long-term vision?
  7. Does each partner demonstrate a level of flexibility and openness to innovation that can help the partnership navigate the dynamic landscape effectively?

In navigating the intricate terrain of business partnerships, the elusive certainty of "when you know, you know" may not be as straightforward as it is in matters of the heart.

However, the essence of successful partnerships does lie in a thoughtful evaluation of critical factors.

While there isn't a one-size-fits-all formula, either of these seven questions serves as a compass for assessing your business partnership compatibility.

So, before you propose a partnership or accept one, take a moment to reflect.
