Dar es Salaam. The media can play a crucial role in influencing financial literacy and inclusion in the country, stakeholders have said.

This was part of the discussion during a special seminar organised by CRDB Bank Plc dubbed ‘CRDB Bank Media Day,’ held at the bank's headquarters in the city.

According to the director of Corporate Affairs of CRDB Bank and the managing director of the CRDB Bank Foundation, Ms Tully Esther Mwambapa, these training sessions are part of the bank's efforts to support the development of skilled journalists in the country.

The bank’s chief executive, Mr Abdulmajid Nsekela, said this year's ‘CRDB Bank Media Day’ focused on the Finscope 2023 report and how the media can promote financial inclusion in the country.

"The Finscope 2023 report indicates that only 22 percent of Tanzanians use banking services, despite significant efforts and innovation in products. This highlights a significant gap in financial literacy, so today we discussed how our colleagues in the media sector can help push the financial literacy agenda," he said.

During the seminar, journalists were trained on how to better prepare and deliver business, finance, and economic news.

Speaking at the seminar, the government spokesperson, Mr Mobhare Matinyi, commended CRDB Bank for organising the seminar, which brought together stakeholders in the media sector to discuss how to increase its contribution to the country’s development, especially in enhancing financial inclusion.

Matinyi assured stakeholders in the sector that the government will continue to create conducive environments to improve the media sector.

Various topics were presented at the seminar, including 'The Role of Media in Shaping Financial Inclusion Narrative,' presented by veteran Ugandan journalist Charles Onyango Obbo; 'Financial Literacy in the Digital Era,' presented by Fayness Sichalwe, Founder & MD Personal Finance Hub; and ‘Business Reporting,' presented by Dr Ndalahwa Masanja, Senior Lecturer at ESAMI University.

During the seminar, which was attended by journalists and editors from various media outlets in the country, CRDB Bank also launched a special competition to find young journalists specialising in business, finance, and economics reporting.

The competition, which will run for two months until April 18, 2024, will award three winners with a prize of Sh1 million each and an opportunity to work with the bank.

The bank also presented awards to recognise the contributions of two distinguished journalists in the country's media sector.

The recipients of these awards were Eda Sanga, a retired journalist from the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and former Chairperson of the Tanzania Media Women's Association (Tamwa), and Ndimara Tegambwage, a veteran journalist who once worked for Uhuru and Mzalendo newspapers and one of the founders of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa).
