Dar es Salaam. Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has established a new mineral exploration company as the mother company is deepening its expansion to the central regions.

The new subsidiary, called Geita Greenfields Mineral Exploration Limited, is expecting to employ 100 percent Tanzanians.

The vice president for sustainability and corporate affairs (Africa) at AngloGold Ashanti, Mr Simon Shayo, announced the development during his address at the Employer of the Year 2023 Award ceremony in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

The company is dedicated to mineral prospecting and exploration, he said, adding that the move was largely due to the favourable investment climate fostered by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“We aim to identify a mining site of comparable scale to GGML,” Mr Shayo said.

Geita Greenfields Mineral Exploration Limited will commence mineral exploration in the central regions of Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, and Shinyanga, with its proposed headquarters in Dodoma.

GGML has been operating in the Geita Region for over 20 years.

The company currently employs almost 6,500 individuals, with the majority being Tanzanian nationals, Mr Shayo said.

He said that 2,300 of them work directly for GGML, while the remaining ones are employed by contractors affiliated with the company.

He said that 80 percent of GGML’s management is Tanzanian. “We are delighted to receive recognition as significant tax contributors from a company that makes substantial purchases within the country.

This is particularly significant considering our annual expenditure exceeds $400 million, with over 75 percent of those funds being spent in Tanzania,” he said.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disability), Prof Joyce Ndalichako, who graced the event on behalf of the Prime Minister, said that the government values the contribution of the private sector.

“These awards will encourage those who have not yet received them to strive for excellence and those who have won them to maintain their hard work and demonstrate the worthiness of the accolade,” she said.
