Rukwa a leading hotspot for simcard fraud, says report
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has recorded a total of 12,044 fraudulent practices using SIM cards in the first quarter of 2023 with Rukwa being the leading hotspot for such malpractice, TCRA’s quarterly report which was released on Tuesday shows.
TCRA’s report for the period from January to the end of March 2023 indicates that Rukwa recorded 5,422 cases, whereas Morogoro registered 2,137 followed by Dar es Salaam, with 1,655 cases.
In the report, Zanzibar recorded the least number of fraud with only Five cases reported during that period followed by Lindi and Mtwara that recorded Seven and Eight cases respectively.
The regulator’s report, however, did not mention the exact type of fraud which it says were committed across five mobile networks of Tigo, Vodacom, Airtel, TTCL and Halotel.
In the last quarter of 2022, Tanzania recorded a total of 12,613 fraudulent practices using SIM cards from October 2022 to the end of last December.
Fraudulent practices using SIM cards include coining, theft through mobile money and banks, which continue to be a headache even as mobile network operators are enrolling subscribers using biometric registration.
