Tanzania’s Abigail Chams misses out on BET Award to Brazil's Ajuliacosta

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian music star Abigail Chams has missed out on the BET Award for Best New International Act, as Brazil’s Ajuliacosta was announced winner at the 2025 BET Awards ceremony held on Sunday night.

Abigail Chams had made history as the only female artist from East Africa to be nominated in this year’s Best New International Act category.

She was nominated alongside Ajuliacosta (Brazil), Shallipopi (Nigeria), Dlala Thukzin (South Africa), Dr Yaro (France), Maglera Doe Boy (South Africa), Merveille (France), Odeal (UK), KWN (UK), TxC (South Africa), and Amabbi (Brazil).

Ajuliacosta’s win marks a strong moment for Latin representation in global music recognition.

Chams’ nomination, announced on May 8, was widely celebrated across Tanzania and seen as a breakthrough for the country's music industry and a significant milestone on the international stage.
