65 killed in six years over mining conflicts

Tarime.  At least 65 people in Tarime District were killed and scores injured between 2009 and 2015 allegedly for trespassing Acacia North Mara Gold Mine.

This was revealed by deputy commissioner of Police Barnabas Mwakalukwa during the launch of a report that also reveals that 270 people sustained serious injuries over the six years.

The deputy commissioner said those who were killed or injured were allegedly trespassing the mine. He called on wananchi with strong evidence to present them to the office of Attorney General so that legal measures may be taken.

“The disciplinary committee within the police force should make sure that officers who breach ethics in the course of carrying out their duties are punished in accordance with the laws,” said Mr Mwakalukwa.

Tarime Rural constituency MP John Heche said that it was time for conflicts between police and wananchi to come to an end.

He said that though others were injured and killed over intrusion allegations others were shot by police while they were going about their own activities.
