Mwanza. The second edition of the Bugando health marathon was launched on June 14, 2025, with organisers aiming to raise Sh1 billion to support cancer treatment for patients in the Lake Zone, especially those from low-income backgrounds.

Held under the theme ‘Bilioni ya Matumaini – Kimbia, Changia Matibabu ya Saratani’ (a billion of hope – run and support cancer treatment), the main event is scheduled for August 3 and is expected to attract more than 4,000 runners from within and outside the country.

Officiating the launch, Mwanza regional commissioner Said Mtanda pledged Sh5 million and urged public and private sectors to support the campaign.

“Cancer cases are increasing at an alarming rate. Since Bugando began offering oncology services in 2009, the demand has continued to grow, while treatment costs remain a burden for many,” said Mtanda. “This initiative is a powerful step toward closing that gap.”

He also announced that former president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete will serve as guest of honour at this year’s marathon.

Bugando hospital’s acting executive director, Dr Bahati Wajanga, said the first edition raised Sh222.4 million, which funded treatment for 153 children. In addition, the hospital received cancer equipment and supplies worth Sh77 million from NMB Bank and other partners.

“This campaign goes beyond awareness. It delivers real results,” said Dr Wajanga. “We are grateful to the government, partners, and all Tanzanians who supported us last year, and we welcome even more this year.”
