Kilosa. A High Court judge will now have the final say in a protracted Morogoro land dispute between pastoralists and farmers, the government has said.
The conflict that dates back to the late 1980s is over boundaries, and it pits pastoralists in Mabwegere Village against farmers in six neighbouring areas.
Lands minister William Lukuvi told Mabwegere villager leaders on Friday that the Chief Justice would appoint a High Court judge to rule in the decades old conflict.
“There will be investigations and the High Court judge will give the final ruling because the arbitration committee has failed to resolve the matter,” the minister said.
He was briefing leaders of the seven villages of Mfulu, Mabwegere, Dumila, Mambegwa, Matongoro, Mateteni and Mbigiri. This was after he received a report by the arbitration committee appointed during the now retired Morogoro Regional Commissioner Steven Mashishanga’s tenure.
Mr Lukuvi said the decision to hand over the case to the Chief Justice was an act of last resort to resolve the long standing dispute triggered by a survey carried out in 1989.
