What you need to know:

Under Mr Filiberto Sebregondi, the EU has supported a range of projects in the East Africa to the tune of a total of 11.5million Euros

Arusha. The East African Community (EAC) says it is happy with the generous support extended by the European Union and extolled the outgoing EU Head of Delegation to Tanzania, Mr Filiberto  Sebregondi for enhancing greater development for the people of the region.

“I would like to thank the EU for believing in us and for supporting our objective of widening and deepening cooperation among the partner states in, among others, political, social, economic and social fields for the mutual benefits of our citizenry” said the EAC secretary general Richard Sezibera during a farewell dinner he hosted for the outgoing official here.

According to him, under the leadership of Mr  Sebregondi, the EU has supported a range of projects in the Community to the tune of a total of 11.5million Euros.

These include the EAC Regional Integrated Support Programmes (RISP) where the EU has injected 2.7m Euros, Maritime Security Programme (2.3m Euros) and the  Regional Electoral Support Programme to support strengthening of the EAC electoral observation methodology where the development partner granted 5m Euros.

Other projects are the Inter-Regional Coordinating Committee  (1.5m). In addition to that the development partner is supporting several East Africa infrastructure projects, including the road network/road transport corridors, energy sector and one stop border posts (OSBPs).

RISP aims at increasing the capacities of the five partner states in the Community to implement the EAC Treaty provisions and Protocols in the areas of Custom Union, Common Market and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the EAC organs and hence deepen integration agenda and increase competitiveness.

The programme, launched in 2012, is part of a 20m Euros package designed for Comesa, EAC, IGAD and IOC. For the EAC, the priorities focus on implementing the Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union and Sensitization programmes.

Its third phase will concentrate on one hand on accelerating the implementation of regional commitments at national level.
