Arusha. The East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) has expressed its concern about terror threats to the region by the Al Shabaab insurgents from Somalia.
Eala Speaker Daniel Kidega told reporters on Monday that the region was not safe with continued “despicable acts of terrorism” perpetrated by the Al Qaeda-affiliated terror group.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms possible, the recent attack on the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) camp in Somalia by Al Shabaab terrorists,” he said during a press briefing ahead of the plenary session, which started today.
He said that Eala and the entire East African Community (EAC) fraternity wished to express its solidarity with the families of the dead, of those missing and wounded KDF soldiers, who were in Somalia for a peace keeping mission.
Until yesterday, the Kenyan government has not revealed the number of its soldiers killed, missing or wounded, maintaining that the process could take sometime.
Nairobi authorities, however, admit that the January 15 assault at the camp west of Somalia was one of the major attacks on the Kenyan contingent since the country deployed its troops to Somalia in October 2011.
