Dar es Salaam. In a move to enhance regulatory efficiency and deepen their understanding of the compressed natural gas (CNG) industry, members of the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) Board of Directors toured key CNG facilities across Dar es Salaam.
The visit aimed to familiarize the board with the operations and challenges faced by stakeholders in Tanzania’s growing natural gas sub-sector.
The delegation visited several CNG stations, including those operated by Rafiki and Tembo Energies in Tabata ToT, and the TAQA Dalbit station located along Sam Nujoma Road. In addition, the board toured the offices of Shields Engineering and Safety Solutions, a company specializing in certifying CNG infrastructure, situated in the Ubungo Maziwa area.

Chairperson of the Board’s Energy Committee, Mr Ngosi Mwihava, emphasized the importance of such visits in enhancing regulatory oversight.
“There are multiple players in the natural gas sector, particularly on the consumer side. Understanding their roles and the challenges they face enables us to regulate more effectively and recommend appropriate interventions,” he said.
Currently, Tanzania has nine CNG stations in operation, with two serving private use at the Dangote Cement Factory. CNG is primarily used for fueling vehicles, industrial processes, and cooking. Notably, establishments such as the Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam utilize it for culinary purposes.

The adoption of CNG continues to grow, with around 15,000 vehicles now using the fuel a number expected to rise as infrastructure expands and public awareness increases.
