Dar es Salaam. The Finland Embassy in Tanzania has signed an agreement of Sh9 billion with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) to support Tanzanian women to participate in political leadership and decision-making.

The 2018/22 second phase of the Wanawake Wanaweza (Women are Capable) project will be implemented by UN Women, the government and civil societies in Tanzania.

The move is to build the capacity of political parties so that women too are given opportunities to participate in leadership roles.

UN Women country representative Hodan Addou said the project would contribute the participation of women and girls in leadership positions.

"Finland’s contribution to the project will support the creation of an enabling environment, elimination of social barriers, support of institutional change and building the capacity of potential women leaders," she said.

Finnish ambassador to Tanzania Pekka Hukka said Finland would continue supporting UN Women and the government in the promotion of women's leadership and political participation for the realisation of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.
