Dar es Salaam. The Information and Communication Technologies Commission (ICTC) has formalised a strategic partnership with the Tanzania Innovation Hubs Network (THN) to enhance the capacity of innovation hubs across the country in harnessing the potential of ICT.
The agreement, signed on 19 June at ICTC headquarters, is also intended to reinforce ongoing national efforts to promote the establishment of innovation centres in various regions.
Speaking during the ceremony, ICTC’s Director General, Dr Nkundwe Mwasaga, underscored the timeliness of the partnership, noting the growing investment interest in Tanzania’s ICT sector.
“The government is eager to see more hubs being established. Our primary responsibility is to lead the way and develop centres with which we can work closely,” said Dr Mwasaga.
He noted that through this partnership, the government will be better positioned to develop digital platforms enabling other hubs to connect with ICTC as a central incubation point.
“Hubs facing operational challenges will be able to tap into our support systems. Our aim is to ensure that those who collaborate with us truly benefit from this ecosystem,” he said.
Dr Mwasaga added that Tanzania boasts a vibrant youth population full of creativity and innovation—attributes that will be instrumental in driving the country’s long-term vision for 2050.
“An innovative economy is one that can elevate us to global competitiveness. We have seen how innovation has transformed economies elsewhere. That is the revolution we are nurturing here,” he remarked.
He emphasised the government’s broader ambition to establish innovation hubs at both district and ward levels nationwide.
“We believe Tanzania can hold its own on the global stage if we fully embrace our creativity and leverage digital platforms,” he added.
On his part, THN Executive Chairperson Kiko Kiwanga highlighted that the network has already connected innovation hubs across 19 regions on both the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar.
“Our core mission is to ensure that every innovator in Tanzania can access support from these hubs,” he said.
Mr Kiwanga elaborated that innovation hubs play a vital role in providing facilities and mentorship to turn ideas into practical solutions that address local community challenges.
“We want every innovator across Tanzania to receive the support needed to improve their decision-making and data capabilities,” he added.
This partnership signals a significant step forward for ICTC in fulfilling its mandate to coordinate and advance the development and application of ICT in the country.
The collaboration is expected to embed ICTC more deeply within the national innovation ecosystem and enhance its capacity to promote innovation as a key driver of the digital economy.
