Muheza. The Tanzania Revenue Author (TRA) has pleaded with residents of Muheza district, Tanga region to shun using illegal ports for importing or exporting various products.

The call was made over the weekend by the TRA director of Taxpayers Education, Mr Richard Kayombo, during an awareness session held at Kigombe village.

“You are urged to continue using the Pangani and Tanga port instead of this one (Kigombe), which isn’t registered. Most of the unregistered ports are used for smuggling products, most of which are substandard,” he said.

The villagers asked the government to formalise the Kigombe port, which is located at their area, instead of them using the Pangani port which is located 10 kilometres away.

Mr Kayombo reiterated that the government was determined to collect revenues from all sources that have been stipulated in the laws, extending a challenge for traders to develop interest in paying tax.

Earlier the village chairman Bakari Aly said they are surrounded by number of informal harbours and that their wish was to have one of them legalised for commercial purposes.
