Mwanza. Residents in Mwanza will haved to dig deeper into their pockets after Mwanza Urban Water and Sewage Authority (Mwauwasasa) increased water tariffs by seven per cent.
Mwausa Managing Director Mr Antony Sanga the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) has approved the new tariffs.
According to him domestic users will have to pay Sh900 per cubic meter from Sh880. Mr Sanga said people who are using water for industrial purposes will have to pay Sh1,680 per cubic meter from Sh1,645.
However, Mr Sanga said Ewura turned down their original proposal to increase water Tariffs by 43.97 per cent. The proposal, according to him intended to cub the loss that the company has been incurring due to water loss.
“About 31.8 per cent of water which we are producing daily is lost due to dilapidated infrastructures which include water pipes,” said Mr Sanga.
The Mwauwasa boss added that the authority has also increased the prices of clearing sewage. According to him prices of clearing Sewage has increased from Sh340 to Sh390 per cubic meter.
Some stakeholders have complained about Mwauwasa decision to increase water tariffs. Ewura Consumer Consultative Council Vice Chairman Thomas Mnunguli said instead of hiking the prices Mwauwasa should tap more revenue from water which is lost.
