Mwanza. The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) was among the institutions that took part in the official inauguration of the JP Magufuli Bridge, which links Kigongo and Busisi in Misungwi District, Mwanza Region.
The Executive Director of NEMC, Dr Immaculate Semesi, commended the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, for the successful completion of the bridge.
The structure connects Mwanza Region to neighbouring regions such as Geita and Kagera, and further facilitates access to countries including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and Kenya.
Dr Semesi hailed the project as a major step forward for socio-economic integration and development.

“This bridge will unlock immense economic and social opportunities not only for Mwanza but for the entire Lake Zone and neighbouring countries,” she remarked.
In her address, Dr Semesi called upon the public—especially those residing near the Kigongo–Busisi corridor—to be vigilant in safeguarding both the infrastructure and the environment.
“I urge all citizens to respect the 60-metre buffer zone from the lake’s edge, to avoid indiscriminate disposal of solid and liquid waste, and to embrace sustainable farming practices to reduce pollution in Lake Victoria,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mr Jarome Kayombo, NEMC’s Lake Zone Manager, emphasised the need for all projects around and within the lake to undergo a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) prior to implementation.
He appealed to all Tanzanians who will use the Kigongo–Busisi Bridge to protect the infrastructure and refrain from littering in the lake, warning that environmental negligence could threaten the delicate ecological balance of Lake Victoria.
