Dodoma. Only 7,076 young people reported for national service in 2017/18 out of 20,000 youth selected as per the law, Parliament hears on Wednesday, September 5.

The statement was made in Parliament the Minister of Defence and National Service, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, when responding to a question asked by Tabora North Member of Parliament Almas Maige (CCM).

The MP sought to know whether students recruited into the National Service included those from private schools and colleges or only came from public institutions.

In his response, Dr Mwinyi said students from both public and private institutions were recruited without segregation provided they possessed the minimum joining requirements.

"The government has seen the importance of recruiting students from both sides, that’s why we are doing so. However, they are all enlisted on the volunteering basis,” he said.
