Dodoma. Education Quality Improvement Programme (Equip-Tanzania) plans to implement a special programme on supporting disabled children to access quality primary education.
Moreover, a six-year public programme will focus on raising public awareness on gender-based issues among primary school pupils.
Equip-Tanzania is a government’s special programme designed to achieve better learning, especially for girls and most disadvantaged children and ensure pupils can read, write and solve mathematics problems confidently.
Under the sponsorship of the UK Aids at Sh184billion, timely initiatives have so far managed to improve early grade literacy and numeracy learning through continuous professional development (CPC) for teachers.
“Since the inception of the programme in 2013, it was clear improvements were needed in early primary literacy and numeracy. A 2012 Uwezo household assessment of children’s literacy and numeracy skills concluded that 74 per cent of Standard 3 pupils are at least one grade behind performance expectations in Kiswahili,” said Equip-Tanzania, Dodoma team leader Francis Liboy during an interview with The Citizen.
He noted that the programme was also assisting local government authorities and ward education coordinators to improve district management and planning of primary schools.
