Tabora. A midnight fire has razed five shops in the Salmini area of Chemchem Ward, Tabora Municipality, gutting a variety of businesses, including clothing outlets, salons, and food vendors.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and local authorities have launched investigations to establish the origin of the blaze.
Among the items destroyed were mobile money transfer machines, beauty products, and tailoring tools used for garment production.
Eyewitness, a motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) operator, Mr Saidi Ali, said he and his colleagues encountered the inferno while on duty around 2 am.
They immediately contacted emergency services, saying the fire was far too intense for them to contain on their own.
“We were passing through the area to pick up passengers when we saw the flames. I rushed to alert the fire brigade, while my colleagues ran to notify the police so that security could be provided,” he recounted.

Another witness, Mr Mahasini Ali, said the fire was already out of control when they noticed it, noting that at first, they were unaware that five shops were involved.
“I went to report the incident to the police, and my friend rushed to call the fire and rescue department. Everyone was running in different directions, trying to get help to save property. In this tough economic climate, suffering such a huge loss is heartbreaking,” said Mr Mahasini.
One of the victims, Mr Kelvin Fanuel, who operated a barbershop in one of the burnt structures, said the incident had left him devastated, describing the shop as his sole source of income and a lifeline for his family.
“I honestly don’t know where to begin. This business meant everything to me. I have no alternative means of earning a living. I’m completely lost,” said Mr Kelvin.
Tabora Regional Fire and Rescue Officer, Major Hassani Mande, confirmed that the blaze had been successfully contained before it could spread to neighbouring structures.
He said investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
“Our team was able to stop the fire from spreading beyond the five shop frames. Among the debris, we recovered trolleys and cooking utensils, suggesting some of the shops were being used by food vendors,” he said, adding.
“We urge residents to maintain close cooperation with emergency services and report such incidents promptly,” added Major Mande.
He also emphasised the importance of preventive measures, including regular checks on electrical systems, proper storage of flammable items, and compliance with fire safety guidelines.
Local leaders have called on well-wishers and government authorities to support the affected entrepreneurs as they begin to rebuild their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, residents have urged for improved fire safety awareness campaigns and quicker response mechanisms, especially in densely populated business areas vulnerable to such incidents. No injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident.
