Tanzania’s poorest receive Sh520bn in grants

Dodoma. A total of 1.1 million households have so far received grants amounting to Sh521.9 billion through the Tanzania Social Action Fund (Tasaf) that works towards eradicating poverty in the country.

The Minister of State in the President's Office (Public Service Management and Good Governance), Ms Angela Kairuki, told Parliament on Friday, September 15, 2017 that the registered households had about five million members.

She was responding to a question by Ms RittaKabati (Special Seats-CCM).

Launched in 2000, Tasaf is now in its third phase, implementing a Productive Social Safety Net (PSSN) programme which targets more than one million poor households in Tanzania.

PSSN is made up of a basic grant (unconditional cash transfer), a conditional cash transfer and a public works sub-component.

Tasaf runs through to 2022 in 159 districts in Mainland Tanzania and all districts of Zanzibar.

"Up to August this year, 192 infrastructure development projects worth Sh8 billion have been completed in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar," she said.

She added that 5,136 savings groups with 111,907 members were formed in six districts of Kibaha, Bagamoyo, Chamwino, Lindi, Mtwara, Lindi Municipal, Unguja and Pemba.
