TEA puts down Sh2bn for teacher training

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Education Authority (TEA) has disbursed a total of Sh2 billion which will be used to conduct special training for secondary school teachers in order to improve their ability to teach slow learners.
The move intends to bolster pupils’ performance in their examinations. According to TEA board chairperson Dr Naomi Katunzi, the training will benefit teachers from nine regions across the country.
Dr Katunzi said training has already been conducted in Singida, Katavi, Iringa, Mtwara, Lindi, Pwani, Morogoro, Kagera and Manyara.
She added that teachers are trained to improve their ability to teach slow learners in various subjects which include Kiswahili, mathematics, English and Biology.
In Morogoro training are conducted in two centers-one in Kilakala and another in Mikumi. Dr Katunzi said the Kilakala center brings together teachers from Mvomero, Morogoro and Gairo while the Mikumi center brings together teachers from Kilosa, Kilombero, Malinyi and Ulanga.
Dr Katunzi said the training is in line with the implementation of Big Results Now initiative.
“We have decided to sponsor the training in order to raise pupils performance in school; TEA wants at least 80 per cent of pupils pass their examinations,” said she.
Coordinator of the training from the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) Ms Hadija Majjid a total of 3820 have already benefited from the training.
