Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Mobile Network Operators Association (Tamnoa) has donated Sh240 million to support survivors of mudslides in Katesh township, Manyara Region.
The money will be spent mainly on foodstuffs. It will also be used to purchase drinking water and blankets for the victims.
Speaking as he handed over the aid in Dar es Salaam on Monday, December 4, the chairperson of Tamnoa, who is also the managing director of Vodacom Tanzania, Mr Philip Besiimire, said there is a need for immediate and compassionate action in response to the tragedy as a sign of standing with the victims.
“Our teams and colleagues in the region are working to ensure that network services are not disrupted and that the people of Hanang stay connected to their loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this disaster,” said Mr Besiimire.
The Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Mr Nape Nnauye, received the donation on behalf of the government and said that the donation would be handed over to the Prime Minister’s Office, which handles all disaster management issues in the country.
"I promise you that on behalf of the government, this aid will be delivered to the victims as it should be," he said.
He asked other institutions to continue helping. “When a disaster like this happens, we come together as a country to deal with it," Mr Nnauye noted.
