Dar es Salaam. The government has asked an Indian hospital to expand to other regions in Tanzania after opening a coordination centre in Dar es Salaam.

Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, entered a new era in international medical collaboration at the weekend by unveiling the centre located in Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam.

Speaking during the launching event, the Minister for Health, Ummy Mwalimu, commended the move, saying it’s timely.

“This matter has come at the right time because the mission of President Samia Suluhu Hassan is to ensure that we improve medical services in Tanzania.

“It is the expectation of the government to see that after two or three years, we are going to open the Kokilaben hospital in other cities like Mwanza and Dodoma,” said Ms Mwalimu.

The Kokilaben Hospital Coordination Centre will improve the healthcare journey for patients in Tanzania and other countries in East Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar, by facilitating easier access to advanced medical treatments.

The coordination centre will facilitate patients accessing specialised medical treatments abroad.

The focus of the centre will include cancer treatment, transplant surgery, including bone marrow transplants, neurology and neurosurgery, and cardiac surgery, with a special emphasis on children’s heart surgery for congenital heart defects.

The opening of the centre signifies a new milestone towards bolstering a supportive healthcare ecosystem, aligning with the vision of improved medical treatments and facilities within Tanzania and the broader East African region.“ The new centre will foster medical collaboration and champion patient-centric care.

“Experienced teams from Kokilaben Hospital will be available to guide patients through various processes, ensuring a smoother, more comfortable experience in accessing healthcare services.

“The hospital coordination centre in Dar es Salaam is a significant step in our journey to bridge healthcare borders and bring our nations closer together,” said the CEO and executive director of Kokilaben Hospital, Dr Santosh Shetty. The inauguration event was also attended by specialists from the hospital to share their insights. Air Tanzania Company Ltd.’s managing director, Mr Ladislaus Matindi, also attended the event as the hospital’s travel partner.
