15 clubs set sights on Dar swimming meet

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, the tournament coo-rdinator Alexander Mwaipasi named the clubs as Zanzibar International School, Isamilo from Mwanza, International School of Moshi (ISM Arusha wing), JKT and University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

Dar es Salaam. Fifteen clubs have so far confirmed to compete in the Tanzania Life Saving Society (Taliss) swimming championship later this month.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, the tournament coo-rdinator Alexander Mwaipasi named the clubs as Zanzibar International School, Isamilo from Mwanza, International School of Moshi (ISM Arusha wing), JKT and University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

Also on the list are Dar Swimming Club, Hopac, Spring Rays, Champions Rise, Mbizi, Blue Fins, Morogoro International School, Navy, Tanzania Marine Swimming Club and the host Taliss.

Mwaipasi said that swimmers would battle it out for top honors in various categories, including Under-17 and U-8.

He said the winners in each category would be awarded trophies and medals.

“The swimmers will compete in various categories, including the boys’ and girls’ 100m backstroke and fly, 200m and 400m freestyle as well as 400m individual medley events,” he said.

He said they will stage the event in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the sport.

“A swimmer who finishes first will score 20 points, second and third-placed will get 16 and 14 points respectively,” he said.

The fourth and fifth will get 12 and 10 points respectively, the sixth (8 points), seventh (6 points), eighth ( 4 points), ninth (2 points) and 10th (one point). Mwaipasi said January 23 is the deadline for those wishing to take part in the championship to confirm their participation.

Entry fee for each swimmer is Sh20, 000. He said that they expect to see more than 300 swimmers compete in the tournament.

“Our aim is to make the game develop for the benefit of Tanzanians, We have different age groups purposely to groom them ahead of the next international competitions,” he added.
