Angolan antelopes headlock stallions, advance to AFCON knockout stage

Yamoussoukro. Angola’s resilient ‘Palencas Negras’ (Black Antelopes) secured a historic 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso’s ‘Stallions’ on Tuesday, booking their place in the Round of 16 at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Both teams entered the clash with the ambition of finishing top of Group D and claiming a well-deserved rest period before the knockout phase.

The game unfolded into a thrilling battle, with chances aplenty for both sides.

In the 36th minute, the deadlock was broken by Angola’s talisman, Cristovao ‘Mabululu’ Paciencia. His towering header sent a wave of joy through the Angolan ranks and gave them a crucial advantage heading into halftime.

The Stallions, spurred on by the deficit, charged forward in the second half, but their attacks were repeatedly repelled by the resolute Angolan defense.

Just as hope seemed to dwindle for Burkina Faso, disaster struck in the dying moments.

Ambrosini “Zini” Salvador, lurking on the edge of the box, pounced on a rebounded shot and slotted it home to seal the fate of the match.

The final whistle sent the Angolan players into euphoric celebrations, while the Burkina Faso contingent slumped to the turf, their dreams of group leadership shattered.

This result also had significant implications for other Group D teams. Mauritania’s historic win over Algeria secured them a place in the next round as one of the best third-placed teams, while the former continental champions crashed out of the tournament in a shocking upset.

In post-match interviews, both coaches reflected on the significance of the match.

“We achieved a record,” beamed Angola coach Pedro Gonçalves, “two consecutive wins! I am incredibly proud of these young men. They showed their mettle and proved we deserve to be here. We will rest and prepare for the next challenge.”

Hubert Velud, Burkina Faso’s coach, acknowledged their shortcomings. “We played well initially, but our attack lacked effectiveness. We couldn't overcome the two goals, and that demoralized the team.

However, we finished second in a tough group, and the knockout stage presents a new opportunity. We will regroup and be ready for the next battle.”

The Angolan Antelopes now face an unknown opponent in the Round of 16, while Burkina Faso must lick their wounds and prepare for the next qualifying cycle.

The tournament continues to offer thrilling matches and unexpected results, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this captivating African football spectacle.
