Dar es Salaam. This year’s Tanzania Junior Swimming Championships will be held on June 22 and 23, the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) has announced.

The two-day event has been organised by TSA and its preparations are currently underway including looking for sponsors. Swimmers will compete in various categories according to age.

TSA secretary general Inviolata Itatiro said the event will have age categories including under seven, eight/ nine, 10/ 11, and 12 years. Inviolata said the competition will bring together swimmers from various parts of the Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

TSA has organised the junior event to promote the sport, besides giving international experience to budding swimmers. She said the previous event held last year in July saw more than 150 enthusiastic young swimmers who were a force to reckon with.

She said they believe thus time around more swimmers in the water, competing, reducing Personal Best Times (PBs) and breaking records.

“The mission of staging the event is the TSA’s mission to raise awareness and promote swimming,” she noted.

A total of 82 disciplines will be contested by junior swimmers in the event expected to be thrilling. She said swimmers who will win gold medal in the individual event will be awarded six points while silver and bronze will receive three and one point respectively.

According to Inviolata, there will be no point for relay event as well as no point for those who will be awarded if the qualifying time for swimmers is below standard.

She said trophies will be awarded to top three swimmers in each age group while medals will be given to top three swimmers.

The medals are gold, silver and bronze for the first, second and third winners respectively.

She called on the private and government institutions to support the event in order to make it more successful.
