Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) has elected new leaders who will be in office for two years.

The elections were held on Saturday at the Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam.

Queen Siraki was elected TLGU president after garnering all 26 ballots that were cast.

Siraki, who was sole candidate for the post, succeeded Sophia Viggo, who opted not to defend her seat in the elections that was supervised by the National Sports Council (NSC).

Speaking after being elected, Siraki, who is also head of Special Assets Management at Exim Bank, said her objective was to take the game to the next level by aggressively promoting it among girls and young women.

She added that TLGU would also promote Tanzanian women golfers both in the country and abroad in addition to scouting for new talent.

“I’m happy to be elected to the post of TLGU president. It’s a milestone in my career as a golfer now that I have been elected to the top post in the national body for women golfers. I thank all those who voted for me, NSC, past leaders and all golf stakeholders in general.

“The task ahead is to promote the game’s development and encourage more women to take up the sport and push women’s golf to new heights. I call for cooperation among all stakeholders in this endeavour,” said Siraki.

She added that the new leadership would soon meet with other stakeholders and discuss challenges in the women’s game and how they could be surmounted as part of wider efforts to promote the sport.

Apart from Siraki, others who were elected on Saturday included Ayne Magombe, who was voted in as vice president after polling 25 votes.

Yasmin Chali was elected honorary secretary-general after polling 24 votes, while Joyce Ndyetabura is the new treasurer after garnering 25 votes.

Hawa Wanyeche garnered 24 votes to take over as competition secretary.

New honorary secretary-general Yasmin Chali said the new leadership would go out of its way to develop the women’s game.

“We will cooperate with other stakeholders as we endeavour to attain our goals. We have seasoned golfers who are ready and willing to develop budding talent,” she said.

For his part, NSC sports officer Benson Chacha challenged the new leaders to invest more time and resources in youth programmes.
